Baroness Nicholson has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the Law Faculty of the University of Craiova.
Romanian Education Minister, Sorin Campeanu, and the Secretary of State for Higher Education, Gigel Paraschiv, joined students, alumni and senior figures from the University in a packed auditorium to witness the presentation and hear speeches from the Rector of the University, Dan Claudiu Danisor and the Vice Dean of the law faculty, Sebastian Raduletu.
Also in attendance were Professor Ion Dogaru, a member of the Romanian Academy, Nicolae Popa, former President of the Constitutional Court and the High Court of Justice, and his grace, Bishop Irineu of Oltenia.
Speakers acknowledged the Baroness’ work in encouraging the accession of Romania to the European Union and her leadership of both ACHLG and ACHLG’s Community Action programme. They also praised her work championing the rights and interests of disadvantaged young people of Romania.
Reading from the laudation, Professor Raduletu told the audience: “Thanks to the Baroness’s actions, Romania has made huge steps in improving the situation in the fields which are so relevant to a country’s degree of civilization.”
He added: “Her tireless support for children’s causes and rights continues, both here and in the UK where she raises both awareness and funds.”
Baroness Nicholson spoke of her deep affection for the people of Romania and that the University’s recognition of her work through the award was a moment of great honour and privilege.
